The Hypocrisy Is Thicker Than My Waistline After Thanksgiving
Remember all those warnings that Obama/Biden/Harris/any other Democrat was coming for your guns”? Heh. Yeah.
For years, we’ve heard the dire warnings, seen the frantic emails, and endured the passionate pleas about “them” coming for our guns and, more specifically, building that dreaded gun owner registry. Guess what, folks? The calls are still coming, but the source of the alleged registry-building might just surprise you. Gun-rights groups are pointing fingers squarely at Pam Bondi’s Department of Justice, accusing her of doing exactly what they’ve always feared [1],[2]. It’s like finding out your designated driver is totally sober, but they’re driving straight into a ditch you’ve been avoiding your whole life.
Registry Fears Go From Paranoia to Policy
It seems the alarm bells are ringing for good reason, according to folks like Gun Owners of America (GOA) and the National Foundation for Gun Rights (NFGR). They’re not just whistling Dixie; they’re calling out Bondi’s team for what they see as “disgustingly anti-Second Amendment” moves [1],[2]. One particularly spicy accusation centers on the DOJ attempting to compel a plaintiff to hand over their private membership list – talk about an invasion of privacy, eh? [3]. This isn’t just a minor disagreement; it’s a direct challenge, making gun owners choose between fundamental freedoms [1].
The NFA Challenge and Denying “Universal Relief”
Beyond the membership list kerfuffle, Bondi’s DOJ has been busy. They’ve been filing Supreme Court briefs to oppose challenges to the National Firearms Act (NFA) registration requirements, particularly for items such as short-barreled rifles [1],[2]. It’s a classic government move, asking the highest court to essentially say, “Nah, don’t even bother looking at this” [3]. And just to sprinkle a little extra salt in the wound, they’ve reportedly denied “universal relief” to all gun owners in another instance, opting instead for a more selective approach [3]. Sounds like someone’s playing favorites, or perhaps just keeping a tighter rein on who gets what.
So, What’s a Gun Owner to Do?
It’s enough to make you scratch your head, isn’t it? The very administration, or at least this particular DOJ, that some expected to be a staunch ally, is now facing accusations of creating the very registry gun owners have historically opposed [4]. It’s a classic bait-and-switch, or maybe just a clumsy fumbling of the ball during the fourth quarter. While Pam Bondi has made other moves, like trying to make it easier for certain convicted individuals to own firearms [5], the current actions are putting gun rights advocates on high alert regarding a registry. It’s a reminder that in politics, you gotta keep your eyes open, because sometimes the wolf is wearing sheep’s clothing, and sometimes the sheep is wearing… well, a different, less sheep-like outfit.
